Motivational Interviewing in Edmond, Oklahoma
Your reasons for change matter.
Motivational Interviewing, commonly called MI, is a collaborative approach for exploring uncertainty about change. At Acuity, MI may be one part of an individualized therapy plan shaped around your values, goals, and readiness.

Understanding MI
Wanting change and feeling unsure can exist at the same time.
You can understand why a change may help and still feel hesitant about what it could require. That tension is not a failure of willpower. It may reflect competing needs, fears, responsibilities, or values.
Motivational Interviewing creates room to explore that ambivalence without being pushed. The conversation helps you hear your own perspective more clearly and decide what direction fits you.
The MI perspective
Ambivalence is information, not resistance.
Looking at both sides can make the path ahead easier to understand.

MI is supportive and purposeful, but it is not a debate. Your therapist may use MI alongside other approaches and adjust the work to fit your needs, preferences, and pace.

Motivational Interviewing FAQs
Questions about how MI may fit into therapy
What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational Interviewing, often called MI, is a collaborative therapy approach that helps you explore mixed feelings about change. Rather than telling you what to do, your therapist may help you clarify what matters, notice your own reasons for change, and consider a next step that feels meaningful to you.
Is Motivational Interviewing only for people who are ready to change?
No. MI is often useful when you want something to change and also feel uncertain, cautious, or not ready. Therapy can make room for both experiences without pressure or judgment.
Will my therapist try to convince me to make a decision?
Motivational Interviewing respects your autonomy. Your therapist can help you explore options, values, concerns, and possible consequences, but the goal is not to argue with you or make the decision for you.
What might we talk about during Motivational Interviewing?
You may talk about what you want, what makes change difficult, what has helped before, and how a possible step fits with your values and everyday life. The conversation is shaped around your goals and readiness.
Can Motivational Interviewing be combined with other therapy approaches?
Yes. At Acuity, MI may be used alongside other therapy approaches as part of an individualized plan. Your therapist can adjust the work to your needs, preferences, goals, and pace.
Can Motivational Interviewing be used in online therapy?
Yes. Acuity may incorporate Motivational Interviewing in person at our Edmond office or through online therapy when you are physically located in Oklahoma. Your therapist will help determine whether the approach fits your needs and goals.
