Therapy FAQs

What you may be wondering before you begin

What can I expect in therapy?

Therapy is a collaborative space to talk through what is happening, better understand your experiences, and work toward changes that matter to you. Your therapist will ask questions, listen without judgment, and tailor the pace and approach to your needs.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first session is a chance to get acquainted, discuss what brought you to therapy, and begin identifying what you would like support with. You can share at a pace that feels manageable, ask questions, and talk with your therapist about what working together may look like.

How long will I need to be in therapy?

There is no single timeline that fits everyone. The length of therapy depends on your concerns, goals, preferences, and how your needs change over time. You and your therapist can revisit your progress and decide together what continues to feel useful.

What if I do not feel comfortable with my therapist?

A strong therapeutic fit matters. You can talk with your therapist about what is not feeling right or contact Acuity to discuss another option. Wanting a different style, approach, or connection does not mean you have failed at therapy.

Does therapy actually help?

Many people find therapy helpful, but no therapist can promise a specific result. Progress can depend on the relationship with your therapist, the approach used, your goals, and your participation. Therapy can offer support, perspective, and practical tools as you work toward meaningful change.

What if I do not know what to say?

You do not need to arrive with perfect words or a complete plan. Your therapist can help guide the conversation with thoughtful questions, and it is okay to begin with what feels most present—or simply say that you are unsure where to start.
