Therapy Approaches
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Edmond, Oklahoma
Notice the pattern. Practice a different response.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, commonly called CBT, explores how thoughts, feelings, and actions affect one another. At Acuity, CBT may be one part of an individualized therapy plan built around your needs and goals.

Understanding CBT
A practical way to understand what keeps a pattern going.
Sometimes a thought happens so quickly that it feels like a fact. It can shape how your body responds, how you feel, and what you do next. Those responses can then reinforce the original thought.
CBT helps make that sequence easier to notice. The goal is not to judge your thinking. It is to create enough awareness and flexibility to choose a response that supports you.
The CBT connection
Thoughts, feelings, and actions can influence one another.
A change in any part of the pattern may create room for something different.
Thoughts
The meaning you give a situation, including quick assumptions and familiar beliefs.
Feelings
Emotions and physical responses that show up as you move through an experience.
Actions
What you do, avoid, repeat, or practice in response to what you think and feel.
What sessions may include
Collaborative, focused, and connected to real life.
CBT is often structured, but it should still feel personal. Your therapist may use CBT tools alongside other approaches and adjust the work to fit your pace, preferences, and goals.
Notice the pattern
Slow down and identify the thoughts, emotions, physical cues, and actions connected to a difficult moment.
Get curious
Look at what supports a thought, what may be missing, and whether an old belief is shaping the present.
Try another response
Practice a coping strategy, behavior, or more balanced perspective that fits the situation and your values.
Review what helps
Pay attention to what changes, what still feels difficult, and what you want to keep working on together.
What CBT is not
You will not be asked to pretend everything is positive.
CBT makes room for difficult realities and valid emotions. It can help you examine whether a thought is complete, accurate, or helpful, then consider a response with more clarity and self-compassion.
CBT may be used to support
Different concerns can share familiar patterns.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy FAQs
Questions about how CBT may fit into therapy
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, often called CBT, is a structured form of talk therapy that explores how thoughts, emotions, and actions affect one another. In therapy, you may learn to notice patterns, consider other perspectives, and practice responses that better support your goals.
Does CBT only focus on changing thoughts?
No. CBT considers the relationship between thoughts, feelings, physical responses, and behavior. Depending on your needs, therapy may include emotional awareness, coping skills, problem-solving, gradual behavior changes, and reflection on the beliefs shaping a pattern.
Is CBT the same as positive thinking?
No. CBT does not ask you to ignore difficult experiences or replace every thought with a positive one. The goal is to examine whether a thought is complete, accurate, or useful and develop a more balanced response.
Will I have homework between CBT sessions?
Sometimes a therapist may invite you to notice a pattern, try a coping strategy, or practice a skill between sessions. Any practice should connect to your goals and be discussed collaboratively. It is not a test or a requirement to perform perfectly.
How long does CBT take?
There is no single timeline that fits everyone. The length and pace of therapy depend on your goals, needs, progress, and the complexity of what brings you to therapy. You and your therapist can review the plan together as your work develops.
Can CBT be provided online?
Yes. Acuity may incorporate CBT in person at our Edmond office or through online therapy when you are physically located in Oklahoma. Your therapist will help determine whether the approach fits your needs and goals.
